Igniting Potential: Philanthropic Program Empowers CUSD High Schools

Checks Presented to San Clemente & San Juan Hills High Schools

Our “Igniting Potential” philanthropic program presented checks for $10,000 to San Juan Hills High School and $20,000 to San Clemente High School to help fund the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program. The AVID program is for all students with a priority to serve those determined to be ‘in the middle,’ often low income/first generation college bound, or without other supports.  AVID at San Clemente serves over 10% of the student population with a goal of increasing college acceptances, scholarship money, and helping students create a plan for their post-secondary years.

The Impact on CUSD High Schools

The funds granted by the “Igniting Potential” philanthropic program go towards vocational field trips, computers, school supplies, SAT exams, and additional staff training. Our members also contribute many hours of their time providing interview practice and resume writing advice. ALCV is proud to support the youth in our local community.

A Bright Future Ahead

The excitement surrounding this donation is palpable among students and staff alike. As the funds are allocated for immediate use, both schools can take steps toward enhancing their educational frameworks. With a renewed focus on providing resources that directly benefit students, this program is set to create a lasting impact on the community.

Meet Our 2024 I.N.S.P.I.R.E. Scholarship Recipients

Celebrating the 2024 I.N.S.P.I.R.E. Scholarship Recipients

We are proud to introduce the remarkable individuals who have been awarded the 2024 I.N.S.P.I.R.E. scholarships. These recipients embody resilience, determination, and hope as they navigate the complexities of single parenthood while pursuing higher education. Their stories are a testament to the transformative power of education and the critical role that support systems play in achieving personal and professional goals.

The impact of the I.N.S.P.I.R.E. scholarship program extends beyond individual recipients. By supporting single parents in their educational pursuits, the program fosters a ripple effect that benefits entire families and communities. Children of scholarship recipients are more likely to value education and strive for their own academic achievements, creating a legacy of learning and aspiration. Additionally, the community at large gains from the contributions of educated, skilled professionals who are better equipped to participate in and give back to society.

The I.N.S.P.I.R.E. Scholarship Philanthropy was established with the mission of providing essential financial support to in-need single parents who are pursuing a degree at Saddleback College.  Since its inception, the I.N.S.P.I.R.E. Scholarship Program has not only provided financial assistance but has also become a beacon of hope and support for single-parent students at Saddleback College. By investing in their education, the program underscores the importance of empowering individuals to overcome obstacles and achieve their academic and personal goals. As we introduce our 2024 scholarship recipients, we celebrate their resilience, determination, and the bright futures that lie ahead.

In essence, the I.N.S.P.I.R.E. scholarship program not only transforms the lives of single parents but also paves the way for a brighter, more prosperous future for their children and the community as a whole. The stories of these scholarship recipients serve as powerful reminders of the importance of investing in education and support systems for single parents. Their journeys inspire us all to continue advocating for and uplifting those who strive to overcome adversity through education.

The Transformative Power of the Links To Learning Philanthropy for Middle School Teachers

Amy Varricchio, Principal of Don Juan Avila Middle School, spoke to Assistance League of Capistrano Valley members at a recent meeting.  She shared how ALCV’s Links to Learning philanthropy has helped her teachers.

While states and the federal government are expected to fund basic school supplies, oftentimes programs are left lacking and teachers find themselves buying their own classroom supplies, using outdated technology and textbooks. Assistance League of Capistrano Valley believes in empowering educators to create engaging and impactful learning experiences for their students.

The Links to Learning philanthropy awards grants to middle school educators in the Capistrano Valley Unified School District.  Since the program’s inception in 2000, our chapter has provided 1,000s of grants to middle schools teachers for district approved but non-funded learning enrichment programs. Since each grant can benefit multiple students, the impact is exponential.  Annually, this programs provides $30K in grants ranging from $50 to $500 per educator.

Applications, which outline individual projects and their respective budgets, are solicited from classroom teachers, school counselors and media specialists. Our chapter members act as liaisons to each of the middle schools in the Capistrano Unified School District and keep the schools informed about the Links to Learning program.

In order to be considered for grant money, the program/project request must:

  • Directly benefit and involve students
  • Support and enhance school curriculum
  • Help prepare students for the their futures
  • Promote STEM and STEAM curriculum

Philanthropy Spotlight: Hands On Literacy

Reading is a fundamental skill that lays the foundation for a child’s academic success. However, not all students have access to the resources and support they need to develop strong reading skills. That’s where our Hands On Literacy program comes in.

Assistance League of Capistrano Valley is dedicated to providing reading assistance to elementary students who may be struggling with their literacy skills. Our mission is to ensure that every child has the opportunity to become a confident and proficient reader.

How We Help

We work closely with Capistrano Unified elementary schools and educators to identify students who would benefit from our program. Our team of volunteers provides one-on-one reading support, tailored to the specific needs of each student. Through engaging activities and personalized attention, we aim to foster a love for reading and improve comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary. Additionally, each student receives a book based on their needs.

We are proud to be part of a community that values education and invests in the future of its young learners. Through our philanthropic program, we are working towards a future where every elementary student has the opportunity to thrive academically and reach their full potential.

The Assistance League of Capistrano Valley funds several philanthropic programs providing a variety of assistance to Capistrano Valley and Camp Pendleton children.  We invite you to learn more about each of our philanthropic programs.
