Philanthropy Spotlight: Hands On Literacy

Reading is a fundamental skill that lays the foundation for a child’s academic success. However, not all students have access to the resources and support they need to develop strong reading skills. That’s where our Hands On Literacy program comes in.

Assistance League of Capistrano Valley is dedicated to providing reading assistance to elementary students who may be struggling with their literacy skills. Our mission is to ensure that every child has the opportunity to become a confident and proficient reader.

How We Help

We work closely with Capistrano Unified elementary schools and educators to identify students who would benefit from our program. Our team of volunteers provides one-on-one reading support, tailored to the specific needs of each student. Through engaging activities and personalized attention, we aim to foster a love for reading and improve comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary. Additionally, each student receives a book based on their needs.

We are proud to be part of a community that values education and invests in the future of its young learners. Through our philanthropic program, we are working towards a future where every elementary student has the opportunity to thrive academically and reach their full potential.

The Assistance League of Capistrano Valley funds several philanthropic programs providing a variety of assistance to Capistrano Valley and Camp Pendleton children.  We invite you to learn more about each of our philanthropic programs.

We are proud to have earned the prestigious Candid Platinum Seal of Transparency, the highest level awarded! Transparency is the cornerstone of trust, and we’re committed to keeping you informed every step of the way. Igniting Potential: Empowering San Clemente High School AVID Students

Introducing “Igniting Potential”: Empowering San Clemente High School AVID Students

We are thrilled to announce our new philanthropy program, “Igniting Potential,” which aims to support and empower the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students at San Clemente High School. Through this initiative, we are committed to providing both financial assistance and hands-on support to help these students unlock their full potential and achieve their academic and personal goals.  The diversity of our programs provide flexibility to serve a broader demographic while uniquely addressing the needs in our community.  Learn more about our programs.

What is AVID?

AVID is a nationally recognized college readiness program designed to help students develop the necessary skills and mindset to succeed in higher education. It focuses on students who have the potential to excel academically but may face various obstacles in their path to college. AVID provides them with the tools and support they need to navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

San Clemente High School has a vibrant AVID program that has already made a significant impact on the lives of many students. By becoming involved in this program, we aim to further enhance the opportunities available to these students and help them overcome any barriers they may face.  Learn more about the AVID program at San Clemente High School.

Financial Support

One of the key aspects of our “Igniting Potential” program is providing financial support to AVID students at San Clemente High School. We understand that the costs associated with pursuing higher education can be a significant burden for many students and their families. Our goal is to alleviate some of that financial strain and ensure that these students have the resources they need to succeed.

Through our program, we will be helping them cover expenses such as college application fees, standardized test fees, college field trips, and funding for staff members to attend AVID summer training. We believe that by removing some of these financial barriers, we can empower these students to focus on their studies and pursue their dreams without unnecessary financial stress.

Hands-On Support

In addition to financial assistance, our “Igniting Potential” program also aims to provide hands-on support to AVID students. We understand that academic success is not solely determined by financial resources, but also by the guidance and mentorship students receive along their journey.

As part of our program, ALCV members will serve on several mock interview panels, preparing AVID seniors for college and job interviews. Feedback will be provided to the students to help them improve their interviewing skills. Another key component is providing mentorship and guidance to AVID students by providing industry professionals to speak to AVID sophomores about their profession.

Impact and Future Growth

We firmly believe that investing in the potential of AVID students at San Clemente High School will have a lasting impact on their lives and the community as a whole. By providing both financial and hands-on support, we aim to empower these students to overcome obstacles, pursue higher education, and become leaders in their chosen fields.

Our “Igniting Potential” program is just the beginning of our commitment to supporting education and empowering young minds. As we witness the positive impact of this initiative, we hope to expand our philanthropic efforts to reach even more students and schools in the future.

We are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and look forward to working closely with the AVID students at San Clemente High School to help them ignite their potential and achieve their dreams.

“This is what ‘closing the opportunity gap’ looks like, and Igniting Potential will be instrumental in bridging the gap for these students to see that college and career opportunities are in fact attainable.” shared Erin Dollar, SCHS Avid Director.
